Recitative performance with Martin Lloyd Evans and Elizabeth Rowe

Excellence in recitative needs much work on detail and understanding of moving the story forward.

The conversational quality yet the wealth of interpretation options are learned by good coaching, repetition and attention to structure.

With guest music director, British opera stage director, Martin Lloyd-Evans and coach Elizabeth Rowe, work with singers will be concentrated on the importance of “knowing and understanding  the content of the lines” and “how to bring them to life”. The recitatives lead into ensembles; all of which will be semi-staged for performance.

The workshop which will be mainly focused on Mozart’s opera on Da Ponte’s libretti. It will last for 5 days and it will involve 10 to 12 singers, 2 pianists and 2 stage directors.

This workshop is part of a three workshops cycle on Mozart.

Martin Lloyd-Evans

Opera and theatre director. Martin has directed over 40 productions in the UK and abroad. As well as directing both core repertoire and lesser-known pieces for companies such as Opera Holland Park and Classical Opera Company. He has worked extensively on new and developed pieces, including The Articulate Hand which featured on TEDMED. He holds a part-time post at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama – Resident Producer – where he provides a bridge between conservatoire and profession.

Elizabeth Rowe

Elizabeth Rowe graduated from Birmingham University, the Royal Academy of Music and was sponsored by the Royal Opera House and the Sir Henry Richardson Award to attend the National Opera Studio.

Upon leaving the NOS, Elizabeth free-lanced as a répétiteur with Scottish Opera and English Touring Opera and then joined the Music Staff at English National Opera from 1997 – 2004. Whilst at ENO she worked on numerous productions.

Since leaving ENO, Elizabeth has freelanced for numerous companies, including: The Royal Opera, Oper Frankfurt, The Canadian Opera Company, Glyndebourne, Opera North, Opera Holland Park, English Touring Opera and British Youth Opera. Elizabeth also works extensively with young singers: she has been a regular coach for the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at The Royal Opera House, The National Opera Studio, the Associated Studios London, the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and for Morley College Opera Course.
