Excellence in recitative needs much work on detail and understanding of moving the story forward.
The conversational quality yet the wealth of interpretation options are learned by good coaching,
repetition and attention to structure. With guest music director, British opera stage director, Martin
Lloyd-Evans and coach Elizabeth Rowe, work with singers was concentrated on the importance of
“knowing and understanding the content of the lines” and “how to bring them to life”.
The recitatives lead into ensembles; all of which was semi-staged for performance/presentation. The
workshop was mainly focused on Mozart’s opera on Da Ponte’s libretti. It lasted for 5 days with
involved 10 to 12 singers, 2 pianists, and 2 stage directors.
This workshop is part of the enoa cycle of three workshops cycle on Mozart.
