Gary McCann

The Operosa Forum is dedicated to promoting dynamic classical music and opera talent

Originally from County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Gary trained at Nottingham Trent University. Now based in Greenwich, London, he has worked as a theatre, opera, TV and event designer since 1996.

Current and future projects include - DIE FLEDERMAUS for Norwegian National Opera, THE FLYING DUTCHMAN for Yekaterinburg Opera, Russia, THE BARBER OF SEVILLE for the Nationale Reisopera, Holland, IMENEO for the Royal College of Music, OWEN WINGRAVE, Opera Trionfo Amsterdam, and THE SEAFARER, Perth Theatre.

Recent design work includes THE PITMEN PAINTERS which was produced at the Duchess Theatre in the West End following runs at the National Theatre (Cottesloe and Lyttelton spaces), The Friedman Theatre on Broadway, the Volkstheater in Vienna, and two national tours - the production won the Best New Play award at the Evening Standard Awards in 2009. THREE DAYS IN MAY has recently finished a West End run following a UK tour - the play was winner of the What’s On Stage Best New Play Award in 2012 and is due for revival in 2013. In summer 2012 A WALK-ON PART completed a West End season at the Arts Theatre following two runs at the Soho Theatre. In December 2011 Gary designed the world premiere of THE LITTLE PRINCE musical written by Nicholas Lloyd Webber and Jamie D. Reid - he is nominated for Best Design for his work on this in the 2012 TMA Awards.

Vienna), LA VOIX HUMAINE and L’HEURE ESPAGNOLE (Nationale Reisopera), THE GIRL IN THE YELLOW DRESS (Market Theatre, Johannesburg, Stadttheater Stockholm, nominated for Best Set Design at the South African Naledi Awards), GUYS AND DOLLS (Theater Bielefeld, Germany), LA PIETRA DEL PARAGONE (Opera Trionfo, Amsterdam), SOMEONE WHO’LL WATCH OVER ME, THE ODD COUPLE and MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS (Perth Theatre), FIDELIO (Garsington Opera, revival happening in 2014), NORMA (National Opera of Moldova), COSI FAN TUTTE (Royal Academy of Music), and COSI FAN TUTTE (Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna).
