Stage director

Portuguese stage director Pedro Ribeiro holds a Licentiatura degree in Stage Direction and a BA in Theatre Production and Techniques - Acting and Movement from the Escola Superior de Musica e das Artes do Espetaculo do IPP (School of Music and Performing Arts of the University of Oporto). He has also completed the Opera Stage Directing Course of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Harp Course at Oporto Music Conservatory.

He is a guest teacher of both theatre and music related subjects at some of the leading artistic schools in Portugal and regularly works with symphony orchestras throughout Portugal. He has worked as a performer in classical plays, contemporary dance, performance art, short films and new circus as well as a set and costume designer.

Since 2004, he has been closely involved with the international award-winning company Teatro de Marionetas do Porto as an assistant stage director, costume and graphic designer.

He has worked as a freelance stage director within opera, drama, musical theatre and contemporary site-specific works in some of Portugal’s major venues. Acclaimed productions range from Chekov plays to Carrapatoso operas and include works by Luisa Costa Gomes, Massenet, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Mozart, Berlioz, Rogers & Hammerstein, Handel, Britten among many others.

He joined the JPYAP in September 2011 and made his Royal Opera House directing debut with a staged production of Les Nuits d’été and Le Portrait de Manon during Meet the Young Artists Week, followed by the staging of the JPYAP summer showcase in the Linbury and the concert staging of Il Viaggio a Reims on the main stage (JPYAP 10th Anniversary summer performance). He also assisted the directors of La traviata, Don Giovanni, Falstaff and La bohème for The Royal Opera. In the 2012/13 season, he will direct the JPYAP Summer Performance on the main stage and assist the directors of Robert le Diable, Eugene Onegin, Nabucco and La donna del lago for The Royal Opera. For the next season 2013/2014 he will return to the ROH to present a new premiere in the Linbury Studio Theatre of Montsalvatge "El Gato Con Botas" and back to Portugal to present a Fado song cycle "Severa - O Fado de um Fado".
